New York is the most populous city in the USA with around 8.5m people living here. This is increased greatly with 47 million foreign and American tourists visiting each year. New York was founded as a commercial trading post by the Dutch in 1624 and the settlement was originally called New Amsterdam until 1664 when the colony came under English control. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790 and as many as 800 languages are spoken in New York City, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world.
There is so much history and instantly recognisable landmarks that we couldn't wait to get out and see for ourselves. We arrived on a Friday night and headed straight for Times Square to get right in amongst the action. It was so great to be in about the buzz of a huge city and it was even fun to catch the subway that has appeared in so many films.

Times Square was a blur of people rushing about everywhere and the huge electronic billboards, neon lights and flashes from peoples cameras lit up the sky. We decided to go for a McD's in possibly the most famous loacation in the world where we had a great view out over the square and were able to sit back and soak up the atmosphere. This was followed by a bit of time walking about the Broadway area, settling in to our final destination.

The same night we also went to the World Trade Centre sight from 9/11 where I had hoped to see a memorial of some kind. However plans and construction are well under away to creating a huge museum and memorial scheduled to open on the 10th anniversary of the attack to commemorate the event. The entire area is fenced off and we couldn't get too close, however there was a makeshift museum that we would go back to another day whilst we were here.
